RIO COCO
High in the volcanic mountains of northwestern Nicaragua lies one of the richest growing regions on earth. At the headwaters of the Coco River, farmers of the El Porvenir Co-Operative are cultivating organic, shade-grown beans and producing some of the finest coffee in the world.
SHADE-GROWN
Free of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, Rio Coco Beans are cultivated the traditional way, in harmony with the surrounding forest. Clear-cutting farms of all trees may increase yields, but irreparably damages the environment and destroys the wild habitat of birds and animals. Under the canopy of mahogany and oak trees, shade-grown beans experience mild temperature variations throughout the day that results in a better tasting coffee.
FAIR-TRADE
These beans are purchased from small, poverty level family farms at Fair-trade prices, a premium 50% higher than the non-organic, conventionally grown varieties bought by giant coffee companies. This allows families with no electricity, running water, or roads to compete with the mass producers who unfairly set market prices.
SKILLFULLY ROASTED
Rio Coco Beans are imported and skillfully roasted to bring out the best flavors and aromas of each bean. Rio Coco Light is short-roasted for a lighter body, sweet aroma and higher caffeine content. Rio Coco Dark is roasted longer for a smooth, dark body and oil-rich aroma. We encourage you to try them both.
COFFEE WITH A CAUSE
As you enjoy the magnificent flavor of this coffee, something inspiring is also happening: A portion of the profits is returned to Project Ezra to help educate the Miskito Indian children of Nicaragua. Each cup that you enjoy becomes a blessing to these children by paying teacher's salaries and providing school supplies and logistical support to over 2500 students in 17 villages along the Rio Coco. Your enjoyment of this coffee adds knowledge and priceless experience to their lives.
